Atrial Fibrillation & Arrhythmia Detection

What is an arrhythmia?

An arrhythmia is an abnormality of the heart's rhythm. It may beat too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly.

The HeartKey® Arrhythmia Detection algorithm includes Atrial Fibrillation, Bradycardia, and Tachycardia.

Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.

Bradycardia is an abnormally slow heart rate. This can be normal in some adults, particularly athletes, but may be an indication of an underlying health issue.

Tachycardia is an abnormally fast heart rate. This can be due to exercise or stress but may be an indication of an underlying health issue.

Why is arrhythmia detection and management so important?

The irregular blood flow due to an arrhythmia can increase the likelihood of more serious conditions, including ischemic strokes, heart failure and other heart related complications.

Atrial fibrillation can leave you more susceptible to a heart attack or stroke, therefore it is vital to detect and manage this condition. However, as a lot of arrhythmias are typically transient, it is difficult to catch in hospital .

“Heart rhythm conditions are very common and many of us will have experienced symptoms of skipped heart beats or flutters on occasions. Most of the time these symptoms are caused by safe changes in our heart rhythm caused by extra or ectopic heart beats. Other heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation however can also cause minor symptoms but, left untreated, can increase the risk of stroke or heart failure. Accurate heart rhythm identification is therefore vital to ensure that these conditions are not missed or ignored.”

Having technology available to people at home for detection and management allows doctors to vastly increase the data they have allowing them to make much more accurate clinical decisions.

Tachycardia and bradycardia by themselves are not life threatening. However, they can be an indication of a much more serious condition and if left untreated can be dangerous and cause excess strain on the heart.

With more than 2 million people in the UK experiencing arrhythmias or heart problems each year and an estimated 33.5 million people worldwide experiencing atrial fibrillation, the need for detection and management of this disease is crucial.

The HeartKey® Arrhythmia Detection algorithm builds on the world class Signal Conditioning and accurate Peak Detection stages.

Using this foundation, HeartKey® automatically analyses incoming ECG and determines if an arrhythmia may be present which ultimately can help save lives.

HeartKey® Arrhythmia Detection algorithm complies with the medical ANSI EC57 standard, and is included in the FDA cleared library. The performance validation is available under NDA.
