ECG stands for electrocardiogram. An ECG is a measurement of the electrical signal from the heart.
There is no difference between an ECG and an EKG. Both refer to the same procedure, however one is in English (electrocardiogram – ECG) and is used in the UK, while the other is based on the German spelling (elektrokardiogram – EKG) and is used in the US.
Each muscular action in the heart during its cycle of pumping blood can be attributed to an electrical signal which is detectable at the surface of the skin. ECG detects these electrical signals and allows the interpretation of the hearts activity directly and accurately because the electrical signals travel from the heart to the skin nearly instantaneously.
The signal has several distinct features – the P wave, the QRS complex and the T wave – which make up the PQRST complex. Variation in these signals provides a unique pattern per person and a wealth of physiological information. Individually, ECG and PPG have their strengths. Some advantages of ECG are that the data is useful for doctors and it also can be used for features such as atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmia detection. PPG is useful for continuous, non-invasive monitoring and can be used for features such as SpO2. Combining ECG and PPG in wearables provides a complete solution for collecting continuous accurate data to remotely monitor patient diagnosis and treatment.
Yes, whilst ECG requires two points of contact, there is a wealth of health and wellness information that can be obtained from periodic quick 30 second readings that can't be obtained through other methods.
